Weblearning Design Editor Tips
In the Weblearning E-Learning System, you will see the Design Editor (aka the Rich Text Editor) all over the system – you use it to enter quiz questions and presentation slides, course layout designs, response pages, and more.
Chances are, you have used it to do simple markup such as bold-ing the some text, changing the font size, and perhaps even changing a color or two. However, there is quite a bit more you can do with this editor (actually too much to mention in a single article).
For this article, I will be focusing on the ‘Extras’ drop-down (which you may not have even noticed before), and covering a few things in there that you may find useful.
See the screen shot below to see where the extra’s drop-down box is on your editor:
The general rule to follow is this. Before inserting/adding anything from the extras section, make sure you position your cursor at the exact position in the design area where would like the content to appear.
This enables you to insert an image. You will be able to pick an image from your computer, or from your file library in your account, or from a shared system library (which your server admin may or may not have set up). You can also optionally add reflection to your image, which works under most circumstances, but when it doesn’t, your image will still render (just without the reflection effect). Note you will not see the reflection effect in the design area.
Insert Flash Video
This enables you to insert a Flash video. You will be able to pick a video from your computer, or from your file library in your account, or from a shared system library (which your server admin may or may not have set up). You define the width and height of the video in the boxes provided.
This enables you to insert a file resource. This can be just about anything – a PowerPoint presentation, a PDF document, a video, a web page, and just about anything else. You will be able to pick a file from your computer, or from your file library in your account, or from a shared system library (which your server admin may or may not have set up). You can also insert the resource as a link, a button, or a block – try each to see how they are different (note that the block option inserts a placeholder, which renders into a nicely formatted block in the end).
This enables you to insert a line, where you define the color, thickness, and size, and also whether its a vertical line or a horizontal line. Once the line is inserted, you can further stretch and size it in the design editor (for the most flexibility, use Firefox to do this – Internet Explorer is more limited in this regard).
Insert System Link
This option lets you insert two different kinds of links: 1 – you can add a link that, when clicked, prints the current page (or question or slide or report etc). 2 – you can add a link that, when clicked, shows a pop-up message. For each option, click the button, and fill out the prompts.
This option enables you to set up a design grid on the design area. It is important that you do this BEFORE entering any text or other content, since doing this will clear any existing content.
This option lets you access additional plug-ins installed on your system. You may have purchased additional plug-ins that appear here, but by default, the MODAL BOX plug-in is included with a standard Weblearning E-Learning System build. This lets you insert a web 2.0 style pop-up box.
** COURSE DESIGNER ONLY
Dynamic Block (Wizard / Code Editor)
This is an extremely powerful and cool feature. Basically, it lets you set up regions inside your course pages that will only get displayed when certain criteria is met (for example, during a date range, or only for certain users, etc). Details are beyond the scope of this article, but here are a few resources if you want to learn more:

** QUESTION & SLIDE DESIGNER ONLY
Add a Link to a Slide (or Question)
You will find these three extra options in the Insert System Link option when you are working with a quiz question or presentation slide designer. If you are using the navigational-style layout (where each question or slide appears on a separate page, and users navigate using back/next buttons), you can enhance the functionality by inserting links that go to the next, previous, or even a specific slide (or question). To do so, click the corresponding NEXT PREV or LINK TO SLIDE buttons, and fill out the prompts.
Insert Video Player
This option is similar to the Insert Flash Video option, but this option (only available inside quiz question and presentation slide designers) wraps your video into a player (with a button bar that has a play and pause button). This is the option you will want to choose if you have a non-flash (non-swf) video file you need to deliver online.
That’s all for this article. In a future article, I will discuss some other options not covered here (I suspect it may take 5 or 6 articles to touch on everything available).
